Ludlow Castle - Tudor BuildingTudor Buildings

An unlikely assortment of characters inhabited the Tudor Buildings of Ludlow Castle.

Look out for the grotesquely curious gargoyle staring down from the Prison. This gargoyle is not just for decoration - it serves as a rain spout, keeping running water clear of the wall.

The Porter's Lodge and the Prison were built in 1552. They were later known as 'the Pembroke buildings' , after William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, who was Lord President at the time.

On the right of the Prison are the Stables added in 1597, when Henry Herbet, another Earl of Pembroke, was Lord President. The cost of the Stables was £74 4s 4d.
