5 Things Couples Overlook When Styling an Intimate Wedding

With expert advice from florist Florabunda, Ludlow, and our own Wedding & Functions Coordinator

Planning an intimate wedding at Ludlow Castle is nothing short of magical. Steeped in history and framed by dramatic stonework, the castle’s atmospheric rooms reward thoughtful, sensitive styling.  Whether you’re dreaming of a smaller ceremony or a more relaxed celebration, intimate weddings offer the opportunity to focus on what truly matters; atmosphere, connection and meaningful detail, all within a timeless historic setting.

Choose meaningful spaces over big guest lists

Choosing Ludlow Castle as your wedding venue is about embracing atmosphere, history and a sense of occasion that feels deeply personal. Rather than grandeur alone, the castle offers spaces that invite connection, intimacy and storytelling.

Many couples planning smaller weddings are drawn to celebrating in rooms that allow their closest friends and family to fully share the experience. Ludlow Castle offers a variety of distinctive ceremony settings, each with its own character and charm.

The Library provides a warm, romantic space rich in heritage. The Beacon Rooms offer flexibility and elegance, allowing couples to personalise the setting while keeping a relaxed, welcoming feel. The Round Chapel, with its striking stone walls and sense of timelessness, creates a truly unforgettable backdrop.

“When couples choose a smaller wedding here, it’s usually very intentional,” says Gillian, Weddings & Functions Coordinator. “They’re drawn to the atmosphere and the feeling of sharing these historic rooms with the people who matter most. The spaces lend themselves beautifully to that sense of closeness and connection.”

For many couples, choosing a smaller space isn’t about scaling back – it’s about creating a wedding that feels intentional, immersive and deeply personal.

Create atmosphere with flowers, foliage, candles and texture

One of the most transformative elements in an intimate wedding is floral styling. Local experts such as Florabunda, a much-loved family florist serving Ludlow and beyond for over 40 years, understand how to enhance historic spaces without overwhelming them.

Louise from Florabunda explains how couples can make the most of a smaller, more personal celebration:

“When styling an intimate wedding, flowers and foliage become about atmosphere rather than scale. Smaller guest numbers allow couples to focus on how a space feels –  the warmth of candlelight, the softness of natural textures, and florals that invite guests to pause and take everything in.”

At Ludlow Castle, each room calls for a slightly different approach. In darker, wood-panelled spaces such as the Library, lighter blooms such as soft whites, blush tones and gentle pastels, help lift the room beautifully. Especially when paired with layered candlelight. In contrast, spaces such as the Beacon Rooms can carry bolder designs, from taller arrangements to richer colour palettes and statement fireplace styling.

“Seasonal flowers are always our starting point,” Louise adds. “They sit naturally within the castle’s tones – spring blossoms and tulips, summer roses and peonies, autumn dahlias and berries, or winter evergreens and textured foliage. Combined with candles and tactile elements, they create a relaxed, romantic atmosphere that feels completely in tune with the setting.”

Use unique venue features to reduce the need for excess décor

One of the joys of styling a wedding at Ludlow Castle is knowing when to step back and let the building speak for itself. Spaces such as the Round Chapel, with its striking stone walls and quiet grandeur, require very little adornment. Simple urns filled with seasonal, locally sourced flowers are often enough to frame the space beautifully without distracting from its architecture.

Gillian adds, “One of the things we often encourage couples to do is pause before adding too much décor. The castle has so much character already; stone walls, fireplaces, architectural details, that a few thoughtful styling choices can have far more impact than filling every corner.”

In smaller rooms such as the Library, restraint can be more impactful than repetition. A single, elegant centrepiece can feel far more considered than multiple arrangements, allowing the space to breathe while still feeling thoughtfully styled. Historic settings like these reward simplicity – styling that enhances rather than competes with the venue’s character.

Consider weekday weddings for a relaxed, understated celebration

Choosing a weekday wedding at Ludlow Castle offers couples a wonderfully relaxed way to celebrate. With fewer events taking place across the site, weekday ceremonies often feel calmer and more private, allowing you and your guests to fully immerse yourselves in the atmosphere of this historic setting.

“Weekday weddings often surprise couples,” Gillian explains. “They tend to feel calmer and more unhurried, which works especially well for intimate celebrations. There’s time to enjoy each moment, and the castle feels wonderfully peaceful, almost as though it’s yours alone for the day.”

Weekday celebrations naturally lend themselves to smaller guest lists, unhurried timelines and a sense of ease that can be harder to achieve at busier weekends.

Work closely with experienced local suppliers

Working with local suppliers who understand the venue makes all the difference when planning an intimate wedding. Having styled many weddings at Ludlow Castle, Louise and her team at Florabunda bring invaluable knowledge of the spaces, light and seasons, allowing couples to feel confident and relaxed throughout the planning process.

“Ludlow Castle is such a special place to work. Knowing the rooms and how they change through the year means we can design florals that feel completely at home in the space. It’s always about enhancing what’s already there and creating something personal for each couple.”

Whether your style is classic, rustic, romantic or understated, collaborating with trusted local experts ensures every detail is handled with care.
