Our Meet the Team series continues this month with Debbie, our Customer Services Assistant. Debbie plays a key role in ensuring visitors have a fantastic experience here at the Castle. We caught up with her to learn more about life behind the scenes…
What does a typical day working at Ludlow Castle look like?
There really isn’t a “typical” day at Ludlow Castle! Every day is different, which is what makes the job so interesting.
As a key holder, I sometimes have the privilege of opening up the Castle, especially on weekends. Our Groundskeeper Nigel takes care of it during the week, but on weekends, it can by my responsibility. One of my favourite moments is stepping into the castle first thing in the morning when it’s completely empty. There’s something very special about that—it’s peaceful, quiet, and magical.
Then, it’s all about welcoming visitors. We take turns working in the ticket office and the shop, making sure everyone has the information they need to enjoy their visit. The most important part of my job is ensuring people have a wonderful time here.
At the end of the day when we come to lock up the Castle, my dog ‘Alan’ accompanies me for the final check of the grounds. It’s his favourite time of the day – he feels very important helping with the big key. We have to ring the Castle bell to make sure no visitors are caught out and locked in!
What is your favourite spot in the castle to enjoy a quiet moment?
Quiet moments are rare, but I’d say those early morning openings before anyone arrives. There’s a real sense of history in the stillness—just me, the castle, and the sound of the key turning in the lock. That’s a moment I always enjoy.
If you could give first-time visitors one piece of advice, what would it be?
Make sure you explore the castle properly! There are many rooms and towers to discover. The view from the top of the Keep is breathtaking.
Do you have a favourite time of year to work here?
I think spring is the most beautiful time of year at Ludlow Castle. Everything starts to come back to life—the crocuses and snowdrops bloom in the castle gardens, and there’s a real sense of renewal. It’s a lovely time to visit.
If you could step back in time to any period in the castle’s history, which would you choose and why?
I’d love to experience the Medieval period when Ludlow Castle was at its height. It would have been bustling with life—nobles, traders, and servants all moving through the castle. That’s when it was politically important too, and I imagine the atmosphere must have been incredible.
What do you enjoy most about working at Ludlow Castle?
The variety! No two days are the same, and there’s always something happening—whether it’s a festival, concert, or special event. It’s never boring, and I love being part of something that brings so many people together.
