Uncovering the ancient past and revealing the hidden is only a part of an archaeologist’s mission and from it we harness the art of detection and clues. From the earthwork’s humps and bumps in fields, to interesting placenames meanings, to topographical features of a townscape. Even the architecture of the towns buildings and their fabric are all part clues to the ancient past…and what lies beneath.
When we walk this earth and into the townscapes within cities villages and hamlets do we really stop to consider what’s beneath the very ground we are walking upon? You may be surprised to find what’s there.
Underneath any village or Townscape lies the possibility of a hidden sometimes disused hive of human activity, it could be that tunnels that are hidden beneath the surface, and therefore is a whole unseen landscape that remains unrecorded. Mainly built and constructed as passageways, cellars or storage facilities and even as possible escape routes in times of conflict, these structures have constantly changed over time.
As in any Castled or monastic settlements there are always whispers of a hidden secret landscape and urban myths of tunnelled entrances and hidden passageways…but are they really there?
