A Family Day Out with History, Adventure and Great Food
Half Term is nearly here and if you’re looking for a day out that combines history, fresh air, storytelling and good food, Ludlow makes the perfect family destination. Compact, characterful and wonderfully walkable, it offers just the right balance of activity and relaxation – without the overwhelm of bigger attractions.
At the heart of it all sits Ludlow Castle, providing the perfect starting point for a memorable day out.
Morning: A Castle Adventure Awaits
Begin your half-term visit here at Ludlow Castle, where families can take part in the brand-new Search for the Lost Crown trail (running 14th – 22nd February).
Long ago, a young Prince lived at the castle. One spring night, his crown broke, scattering pieces across the grounds. Children are invited to follow the trail, solve riddles and collect letters to discover the Prince’s name – learning about his life at Ludlow Castle and beyond as they explore.
It’s a wonderful way to let children lead the adventure. The trail encourages curiosity, problem-solving and imagination, all while exploring the castle’s towers, walls and sweeping views across the Shropshire countryside.
Best of all, the trail is included with admission – making it an easy, enriching half-term activity for families.
Lunchtime: Relax and Refuel
After a morning of castle exploring, it’s time to warm up and recharge.
You don’t even need to leave the grounds to find a welcoming spot for a refuel. Chapter 66 is located onsite, offering light lunches, homemade cakes and hot drinks – ideal for keeping little legs happy and energy levels topped up.
If you’d prefer to explore further, Ludlow’s food scene is famously good and refreshingly family-friendly.
- Bill’s Kitchen – a hop skip and jump from the Castle – this is a reliable favourite, serving brunches and hearty lunches in a relaxed setting.
- Aragon’s, also on the Castle Square, serves fresh home-cooked food with many ingredients from the local produce market
- Pietro Lounge is a great spot to eat drink and unwind from morning to evening.
Afternoon: Stories and Entertainment
Depending on the day you visit, you can add an extra layer of magic to your half-term plans with a visit to Ludlow Assembly Rooms.
From family films, to theatre productions such as Wonderland, (Saturday 21st February) the Assembly Rooms regularly host performances and events designed with younger audiences in mind. It’s a wonderful way to round off your day. See their events calendar here.
Alternatively, simply enjoy a gentle wander through Ludlow’s historic streets. The town is full of half-timbered buildings, independent shops and hidden architectural details, inviting families to slow down and explore together.
